Having flown with Aer Lingus on many occasions in the past to the East Coast, I never had the chance to review fully the service that they have to offer. Having recently flown on board their EI139 service from DUB-BOS, I decided to review their offering.
Arrival at DUB- Having arrived at the airport just after 2 in the afternoon, I proceeded directly to the baggage drop area. I was able to check-in online via Aer Lingus’ mobile app and simply headed to the self-service kiosks located around Terminal 2 in Dublin. These machines are extremely simple and quick to manoeuvre through but if you do need assistance, there was always several staff members on hand to help. Once I got my boarding card and tag for my luggage I dropped my bag to the baggage drop area before heading to the Departures area. At this time of the day, the security area was relatively quiet and moving at a brisk pace. Fortunately, I was able to reach the Duty Free in around 10-15 minutes after entering Security.
Departures In DUB- Terminal 2 in Dublin Airport doesn’t offer as much variety in terms of shops, restaurants and bars compared to Terminal 1. However, it still provides a good selection of amenities for travellers, ideal quiet spaces & excellent vantage points for spotting. (Want to know more about the Departures Area? For many including myself, it is a huge benefit for travellers allowing them to reduce as much as several hours off their waiting time with Homeland Security in the US. There is both electronic and personal booths to complete the process and in non-peak times can take between 5-10 minutes. For myself it was no different and I was able to clear all procedures and documentation before heading towards the gate.
Around 2 hrs into the flight, the crew began to serve dinner to everyone. For economy passengers there was a choice between a Pasta Bolognese Dish or Chicken Breast severed with vegetables for the main course. I opted for the latter which also included a desert, salad and drink of water. The meal overall was quite reasonable and filling considering the circumstances of being up 37,000ft. I decided to get some rest and this was definitely a better possibility with the extra legroom but not so with the seat having no reclining option. Around 1 hr before landing the crew again came around and gave a small pre-arrival snack containing a muffin and choice of Tea/Coffee. We shortly after began our descent into the Bay of Massachusetts with a different approach over the airport for landing on Runway 4L. We touched down at 18:07 EST around 20 minutes ahead of schedule. The short taxi to our gate left us pulled up beside an Aer Lingus 757 bound for Shannon that evening.
Conclusion- Before 7pm that evening, we had cleared all security and customs and was about to get a taxi outside the arrivals hall in Terminal C. Overall my experience with Aer Lingus Long-Haul can be described as a worthwhile and enjoyable one. Apart from the small issue of the IFE not working the crew can only be described as extremely helpful and kind to all passengers. The food was of good quality and taste and overall I would definitely recommend Aer Lingus for both service and connectivity when travelling to North America.
